This fall we are seeing lots of hair trends in both color, cuts and styles. We have provided 15 new ways to color, cut or style your hair this fall and winter. Celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Katy Perry have changed up their hairdos! They are following the hot hair styling trends people are going nuts about. Short bobs with bangs, layers and lush highlights and more. I spent time researching and talking to experts in the hair industry including my personal stylist Shaina Marx, owner of Belle Marie Salon in Seattle.
The biggest hair trend is the lived-in look says Shaina Marx owner of Belle Marie Salon in Seattle. it’s not beach waves. Don’t be calling it ombre’s either. Women are looking for the low-maintenance look. The kind of hair that looks great at the gym or at a party.
Marx, a popular award -winning Seattle stylist for over 14 years explains how she pays close attention to the lifestyle choices of her clients before she suggests a hair style and color. Do you wear your hair up or down more often? You get the picture.
Marx is a big advocate for continuing education to keep skills and style up to date with trends. She has studied in Milan, Vancouver BC and London.
Shaina has been by stylist for over 10 years and is known for being an expert in color and cuts. I was sitting in her chair recently, she was telling me all about the new trends so I thought I would share them with you here!
HAIR COLOR TRENDS
As far as color is concerned, balayage hair painting is big! From baby lights-very fine micro foils that grow out very soft. Then there is foilayage which gives BRIGHT balayage lived in look. What is Foilayage I had to ask?
Foilayage, is a combination of foils and balayage. The process, which is also sometimes spelled as foilyage, involves a colorist hand painting highlights throughout your mane before wrapping each in a sheet of foil. The process combines the natural look of balayage with the sped-up process of foils. Pretty cool right?
If you are looking for natural dimension…balayage is the highlighting technique for you. This process will add some subtle dimension to your mane without changing your root color or lightening your strands too much.
If you want bright, dimensional highlights…foilayage is your perfect highlighting technique. It willl create natural, dimensional highlights. With the addition of foils, your highlights will appear brighter and lighter.
There are also a lot of toning techniques like root tap or smudge, shadow root Marx explains. For instance, a shadow root treatment, makes panicking about dark roots a thing of the past, by embracing your root color by blending it into your highlights—or by making a huge statement with it.
Balayage, Foilayage, Root Tap & Shadow Root Treatments
1. FOILAYAGE
Foilayage on the top and free hand balayaged on the bottom. Marx toned the top by doing a root tap, giving a softer root look and a bright blonde toner on the ends to give some blonde pop.
2. COMBINATION OF FOILAYAGE AND BALAYAGE
In this photo Marx did baby lights, foilayage and balayaged the ends. I cut her hair in a textured bob with a lot of movement.
3. FREE HAND BALAYAGE
This is free hand balayage when the hair is hand painted.
4. TEXTURED LONG LAYERS
“I did foilayage and balayage. Textured long layer haircut. Giving this client tons of depth and movement.” said Marx
5. TEARDROP SHADOW ROOT
“This client we had been doing bright blonde balayage. She wanted to move towards a color that was closer to her natural but still had some blonde in it. I did a teardrop shadow root to give her that look.” Marx explained.
6. ROOT COLOR & BABY HIGHLIGHTS

7. CURTAIN BANGS
Curtain bangs are uber popular. The style looks amazing on hair that’s any length, whether it’s pulled up or worn down. Curtain bangs are incredibly wearable because you can move the fringe forward to frame your face or you can tuck it back behind your ears to open up your features.
8. TEXTURED LAYERS OR INTERNAL LAYERS
Marx says “the trend is towards lots of movement with textured layers or internal layers will be in demand.” The cuts all provide a soft and not harsh so the style is easy to maintain.
9. BLUNT BOB
A blunt bob works well with turtlenecks and sweaters. If you have thick hair, taking more hair off the ends will add more movement. You will see lots of blunt bobs this season— a statement cut.
