Top 16 Beauty Trends For 2022

I think we can agree that we are ready to put ourselves out there after the third national lockdown and the ongoing pandemic nightmares. The face mask requirements have caused pandemic lifestyle-related skin concerns in people of all ages. We hope the new year brings the opportunity to unmask put our best face forward. Yes?

So what is on the horizon in the beauty arena in the New Year? The top beauty trends for 2022 range from professional devices and treatments to hair and nails… We have you covered.

Beauty expert Clare Varga (Head of Beauty at WGSN) states that beauty routines and products will focus on health, science, sustainability and social justice in the post-pandemic era.

Usability and Sustainability

According to the trend forecasting company WGSN, a universal thread amongst new beauty products in 2022 will be “usability and sustainability.” In terms of your everyday routine, this means that you can expect longer-lasting, more potent, and comprehensive crafted formulas that are safe and clean for you and the ecosystem. More clean makeup and skincare options to boot.

In terms of makeup and skincare, there are so many exciting beauty trends that will be big next year! Within the last several years, the demand for clean products has been robust. Cosmetic brands have created new clean formulations for the entire body in green sustainable packaging. This is a great news because the FDA hasn’t done enough to protect us from harmful chemicals in our beauty products. The consumers have demanded this and finally our favorite brands have paid attention to the importance of offering non-toxic products.

The new year is rolling out the red carpet for some emerging trends in the beauty marketplace (on the professional and personal side) and I think you will love them! Here is a list of some of the hottest new trends to watch for in 2022:

1. Fermented Beauty

Fermented ingredients have the potential to boost our barriers, plus the naturally occurring bacteria prolong the shelf life of formulas, which will appeal to the sustainably minded. WGSN notes that fermented ingredients—especially kombucha—are about to take off even higher than they already have.

The fermentation process uses microorganisms to break down organic materials, creating desirable, and nutrient-dense byproducts like amino acids and peptides. By design, this process concentrates nutrients, making them not only more potent but also more easily absorbed—the perfect solution for skincare.

Fermented ingredients made from lactic acid bacteria, yeast bacteria, rice, honey, and other fermented ingredients have gained a reputation for their potent skincare effects, assisting with everything from improved barrier function and collagen synthesis, to powerful anti-aging repair.

2. Male Marketed Beauty On The Rise

Male beauty products sector expected to generate global sales of $81.2 billion by 2024. This is partly because of the lockdowns–when men experimented with products comfortably at home.

3. Green Packaging

Refillable packaging has gradually but surely become a part of our everyday beauty vernacular. These days, consumers are demanding brands pay closer attention to sustainable products and packaging.

4. Waterless Products

You will see more waterless beauty products. Why? They are more potent, which means you don’t require preservatives.  “The world’s freshwater supply is depleting, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in water-stressed circumstances,” warns Varga. Because of this, she speculates that waterless beauty is bound to “migrate from novelty to necessity.” She predicts companies will react by developing products that “try to lessen the need for excessive water usage.”

5. High-Tech Wellness (Functional Fragrances)

I find skincare and modern technology extremely interesting, so I am always investigating the biggest beauty trends. A new trend is that conscious consumers are more interested in buying products that have the power to do more. In the beauty industry specifically, this translates as consumers wanting products that are not only effective but have a wider purpose.

For instance, in the fragrance category, wearing scents to smell good is one thing but what if it smelled good and gave you more energy too? Cognitive function and the olfactory system are closely linked, smells can trigger both emotional and physiological responses. Put simply, scent is one of the fastest ways to alter your emotional state.

Cognitive Function & Olfactory System

Companies like The Nue Co., which uses patented neuroscience technology in its perfumes to tap into different parts of the wearer’s brain and deliver different benefits – from increased focus on energy. The brand’s newest launch, Mind Energy promises to promote mental clarity over 30 days. Just what the doctor ordered.

The Nue Co said this “When we started developing our Functional Fragrance, we wanted to make an instantly de-stressing supplement. And we looked at the landscape and tried to figure out what we could create that would deliver immediate results.

The reality is that a capsule takes, on average, between 20 and 40 minutes to break down depending on the shell. And a tincture takes about 20 minutes to absorb into the body. So, none of these offer immediate benefits, whereas your sense of smell, your olfactory system, is one of the fastest ways to impact our cognitive and emotional state. Once we made that connection, we thought now this is really interesting; it’s an area that no one else has innovated within.”

6. Nail Art

In the report, Pinterest Predicts 2022, women will paint landscape-style designs on their nails. You will see lots of funky artist designs painted on nails including rhinestones and other embellishments.

7. Full Bodied and Glam

It is predicated by Pinterest that in 2022, people will celebrate their natural texture with big hair styling techniques. Gen Z-driven space buns and high-puff hairstyles will continue to spike as people find new beauty inspiration with Pinterest’s hair pattern search feature. Pinterest reports significant interest in high puff hairstyles, space buns, short natural hair styles and natural hair bun styles.

The bob is going nowhere

The bog is not going anywhere in 2022. It’s here to stay.

8.  Botox That Lasts- Meet Daxi

It’s almost here, ladies! An alternative form of Botox that is presumed to last longer. DAXI, is a neuromodulator that boasts a longer lifespan (six-to-eight months) than those presently on the market. “With DAXI you’ll only have to come in twice a year rather than three or four times a year,” says Dr. Bruce Katz, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Juva Skin and Laser Center in New York. DAXI’s arrival to your derm’s office is imminent—it’s currently awaiting final FDA approval, which is expected to come at the end of 2021 or early 2022.

9.  Skin Tightening

As technology advances, so does our access to high-tech beauty tools that correct our skin. Lunch time treatments especially skin tightening is always in demand.  In 2022 we will see some exciting new FDA approved anti-aging devices. Check out my Plasma Pen Treatment experience here.

For instance, Cytrellis just received the green light for the device, which it’s named the ellacor system with Micro-Coring technology, and will be marketed as a minimally invasive method for reducing moderate-to-severe wrinkles in the mid and lower face.

“Ellacor is a new device category—fractional micro-coring,” says Dr. Paul Jarrod Frank, celebrity cosmetic dermatologist and founder of PFRANKMD. “Rapidly automated fine needles are literally extracting little cores of skin away from the area of treatment. These tiny holes close up quickly and can help improve wrinkles and skin tightening without having to do actual face lifting.”

While Ellacor technically only FDA showed to treat moderate and severe wrinkles (not as a face tightening treatment), Dr. Katz notes that micro-coring can be more effective than the laser and radiofrequency tightening devices currently on the market because “as the skin heals, it tightens because there is less tissue there.” While radiofrequency stimulates collagen to in turn tighten the skin over time over multiple treatments, micro-coring is done with just one treatment and it’s long lasting.

Dr. Frank believes tightening treatments are the wave of the future, partly due to people going overboard with their injections. “With some advances we have with other skin-tightening procedures—threads, energy based devices, the new Ellacor—we can actually make cosmetic improvements without having to overfill and over freeze the face.”

10.  Home Skin-Care High-Tech Devices

We will see more hand-held skincare devices on the market in 2022.  Using a skin tightening device at home might indeed be the perfect addition to your anti-aging routine . Radio frequency and red light devices have proven to work if used consistently.

These small little devices go into the deep skin layers, heating the dermis using low-energy radiation. It’s this heat that boosts collagen production, helping improve wrinkles and sagging skin while also fight sun damage. Similar and improved products will hit the shelves in the new year.

11. Lip Flips

There’s no doubt that we’ve seen a return to a more natural-looking aesthetic trending in recent years. This was, of course, fueled more recently by the pandemic and losing access to in-office treatments during lockdown.

Dr. Alexis Parcells of Parcells Plastic Surgery in New Jersey confirms this trend shift will also affect how facial enhancements will be pursued.

“Many women are interested in rejuvenating their lips, but they don’t want that over-filled, unnatural look associated with fillers,” she says. “With a Botox lip lift, you can temporarily relax a very small area of the muscle surrounding the lips, which causes the lip to roll slightly upward and appear more voluminous and defined.”

12.  Bold Lips

The bold lip trend isn’t going away soon. The only thing changing? When we wear it. Swipe on your brightest and boldest color (like this vibrant red lipstick on Selena Gomez) for not just first dates and parties, but also for WFH meetings and running errands. And if you’re not sure which shade works best for you, start by narrowing down your skin undertones first, which will help you choose between a warmer or cooler toned lip shade. Keep an eye out for toxins in the beauty products you buy. See the list of toxic ingredients here.

The beauty experts predict that shades such as bright pink, purple, and orange will have their moment in the new year…. Despite the mask requirements.

Anything metallic should be on your list for the best lipstick winter trends 2022! It’s especially perfect for a night out when you’re celebrating and partying!

13. Very Natural Foundation Bases

As you shop the shelves of your favorite beauty retailer, you may notice a shift away from medium to full coverage formulas in favor of comfortable, breathable, and straight-up natural-looking bases.

14. Fluffy brows

Put the tweezers down, don’t even think about waxing, and keep on growing them out, just like you did during quarantine. Have you noticed all the buzz about bushy eyebrows?

How to make fluffy eyebrows? They may amplified by makeup or eyebrows can be permed. This is called laminated eyebrows.

Eyebrow lamination — a perm for those wanting their brows to appear fuller, thicker and maybe a little unkempt — is one of the latest semi-permanent beauty trends (think micro-blading, or tattooing on eyebrows). During the pandemic, some aestheticians saw the number of clients requesting laminations increase substantially, even though the trend has been around for a few years now.

15. Shimmery Lips and Face

Lip gloss that is glittering and super shiny with just a touch of pigment and shimmer (like this warm gold) that’ll give your lips a soft glow.

Style Magazine states that makeup artists believe that the comeback of ’60s-inspired makeup is due to the pandemic. The 60’s inspired makeup focuses on being seen in a big way. Think… Supermodel, Twiggy’s big eyelashes fluttering falsies . Diana Ross’ bold, graphic winged eyeliner and, of course, Elizabeth Taylor’s bonafide bright blue eyeshadow. It only makes sense that women will want to play with makeup now more than ever as we all want to have fun with the new lash and liner products on the market.
