In my 20’s I spent so much time in the sun, and I didn’t start to wear sunscreen until I was in the ’30s. Yikes, I sure wish I knew then what I know now about preventive skincare.  Who knew the simple Vitamin A would be a game changer.

Unfortunately, as we age, the sun leaves us with souvenirs, including wrinkles, brown spots, broken blood vessels, even skin cancer. The really good news is that you can reverse skin damage!  Skin experts say that your skin is much like our lungs, an organ that can improve significantly with proper care. I know, cool, huh?

It’s never too late to start taking better care of your skin. These days, there are so many exciting things happening in the skincare industry, especially with the research behind natural skincare products.

When it comes to products that will help turn back the clock on our skin, look for some of these best products and brands backed by research.

1.  CBD OIL (CANNABIDIOL)

We are seeing Cannabis everywhere these days. It has been tested and approved in various wellness categories, including dermatology.

It makes sense in that CBD is known to decrease inflammation. This is also true when it comes to skin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), Cannabis has high concentrations of anti-inflammatory properties.

I have used CBD salve for muscle and joint paint. CBD is known now to reduce acne, psoriasis, and eczema when topically applied.

However, further research is required to understand the topical benefits of CBD oil and its properties.

2. GRAPES

The grape seeds, skins, and leaves discarded after winemaking contain some of the most potent antioxidants globally—and now grape skins are utilized for skincare products.

In October 2020, sustainable skincare brand Circumference launched its first moisturizer, made from grape leaves. Potent botanical formulas engineered for your skin’s lasting health and vitality—The company partnered with a family-owned vineyard, and winery Bedell Cellars which provides grape leaves usually thrown out during the winemaking process.

Cult-favorite Vintner’s Daughter—started by April Gargiulo, (one of my most favorite products) the daughter of vineyard owners in California—was ahead of the curve when it released its the second product, its Active Treatment Essence, in 2019, after launching its now-famous grapeseed-based face oil in 2014.

3. BAKUCHIOL

This all-natural, vegan alternative to retinol is making its way onto beauty—shelves for people with sensitive skin.

Bakuchiol contains antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Bakuchiol, is a plant extract that provides the same type of skin benefits as retinol, without the side effects.  Bakuchiol is derived from the psoralea corylifolia plant,” aka the “babchi” plant.

The plant has a long and impressive skincare resume, starting with its use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Modern science has taken an interest, too.

4. ANCHUSA  AZURE

This bright violet wildflower has been thrust into the spotlight thanks to Fortuna. Skin, Italian Skincare Line is known for the non-toxic, natural, and potent ingredients. The purple powerhouse is rich in vitamins C and E and fatty acids and is loaded with antioxidants, making it a potent favorite packed with healing powers.

5.  NIACINAMIDE

Niacinamide is a form of vitamin B3 you may have heard being tossed around. Whether you’re familiar with the ingredient or not, you should be! It offers various benefits, such as reducing visible signs of aging and acne, per the NCBI.

6.  MUSHROOM

While this fungi makes for a tasty dish, it’s also another skincare ingredient that should be on your radar. The mushroom has become a popular ingredient in skincare products since it has anti-aging, moisturizing, and antioxidant effects.

A study from the Molecular Diversity Preservation International (MDPI) states that there are various types of mushrooms incorporated into beauty creams, lotions, ointments, serums, and facial preparations as cosmetic ingredients.

Which mushrooms, you ask? Shiitake, reishi, and portobello are just three of the many popular mushrooms used in skincare, according to the MDPI. These mushrooms are known to brighten, moisturize and provide anti-aging benefits.

7. POLYHYDROXY ACIDS (PHAS)

When you think of chemical skin exfoliators, alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) unquestionably come to mind. Have you ever heard of polyhydroxy acids (PHAs)? If you haven’t, you will be soon. Why?

Polyhydroxy acids are a new group of hydroxy acids- referred to as a new generation of AHA’s. This acid gets rid of dead skin cells and promotes healthy, happy, glowing skin.

PHAs can be suitable for use post-procedure and by sensitive skin types. What’s more, compared to their AHA cousins, PHAs are more moisturizing and can help strengthen skin barrier function. Some of the most popular PHAs are gluconolactone and lactobionic acid.

8. BUCKTHORN OIL

Buckthorn Oil is an ancient Chinese ingredient used for centuries for many ailments. This remedy in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicines provides health benefits ranging from supporting your heart to protecting against diabetes, stomach ulcers, and skin damage.

The oil is extracted from the berries, leaves, and seeds of the sea buckthorn plant (Hippophae rhamnoides), a small shrub that grows at high altitudes in the northwest Himalayan region (1Trusted Source).

Sometimes referred to as the holy fruit of the Himalayas, sea buckthorn can be applied to the skin or ingested.

For the skin, this oil slows down the signs of aging by nourishing the tissues in your skin and body. It also helps with rosacea.

9. TRANEXEMIC ACID

Tranexamic Acid Skin Benefits

Anyone who is dealing with melasma, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, or purple-y red-splotched complexions, you will be so excited about this ingredient. I have fought with melasma and discoloration so I was so excited when I learned about Tranexemic Acid.

Listed in the World Health Organization’s list of Essential Medicines, tranexamic acid was originally used to reduce blood loss in patients experiencing menorrhagia and during open-heart surgery,” SkinCeuticals explains on its website. “However, in 1979, physicians accidentally began noticing that patients who had been treated with tranexamic acid were seeing visible improvement in skin discoloration.

Tranexamic acid helps to fade discolorations from sun exposure visibly, and it can also:

· Fade the look of post-breakout marks of any color and seems to be particularly effective for dark skin tones

· Visibly reduces redness

· Fade discolorations that can occur during pregnancy

· Target several pathways in skin that trigger discolorations

· Be used with any other brightening ingredient.

I have had several friends recently ask me how I take care of my skin. My answer is that I try to focus on a preventive skincare regime that includes using sunscreen and non-toxic antioxidant properties such as Vitamin C, Vitamin A and other active ingredients.

One of my all time favorite products I use daily is the non-toxic skincare line by Violets Are Blue.

I will be adding some of these new trending skincare products to my daily routine. The most surprising ingredient of them all is the last one on the list.

10. BALTIC AMBER- Succinic Acid

My ancient ancestors wore natural Baltic amber necklaces and bracelets, made from amber stones and chips that washed up on the beaches on the Baltic Sea. They thought that the amber pieces had a magical curative powers. They surely had no idea that they were high in succinic acid, but they knew that the amber had medicinal powers.

They used amber in other forms, as well. They made medicines from powder, chips, and stones. They applied amber oils to their bodies to cure ills and slow aging. Amber chips and oils were burned to improve the air in their living quarters and repel flies, mosquitoes and other insects. .

Baltic Amber is a powerful antioxidant that can help to firm up skin and reduce signs of aging.

Succinic acid is found naturally in amber and sugarcane and can be obtained through fermentation for commercial use.

Although it is not backed by enough scientific research yet, succinic acid is being compared with salicylic acid by skincare enthusiasts. While its application and benefits are under analysis, it is already being used actively in the food and pharmaceutical sector for different purposes (Besides boosting skin immunity and cell renewal, amber is also an antiseptic with healing powers, especially for sensitive skin thanks to succinic acid. The succinic acid restores balance at a cellular level, increasing the growth of new cells.

Don’t forget to eat these foods for anti-aging and better skincare. Beauty from the inside out.
